Historical Classes
Historical swordplay is also fun, but on the serious side it pursues knowledge and truth through the physical appreciation of (real but blunt, as opposed to unreal but competitive) swords of various styles. Finesse is of one of the founding schools of the Australasian Historical Swordplay Federation, and Finesse Coaches maintain that the teaching of historical swordplay should be based directly on original manuals and treatises. Finesse Coaches teach a selection of historical weapons and styles, from either facsimile editions, copies of original texts or the best available translation, and in consultation with literature and videos on sword styles and techniques created by valued members of the international historical fencing community. Students are encouraged to embark on their own studies from the widening array of resources available.
Historic swordplay lessons (again, typically in a ratio of 1 coach to 4 pupils) promote poise, balance, self-assurance, and fine motor control. Finesse Coaches teach students how to use their body efficiently and with relevance to the weapon in hand. “Relaxation = appropriate effort”! This involves exercises designed specifically for swordplay, with careful attention to biomechanics. As with modern fencing, Finesse Coaches promote balance and good posture in their students – two imperative aspects of all swordplay, and of general living! The methods used are specially created by Finesse Coaches. Training updates come from Jojo Azurin (ACT’s 2003 Fitness Trainer of the Year). A Finesse Coach who is a soft tissue therapist and has a Level III Integrated Corrective Exercise certificate is responsible for planning Mediball and other training sequences.
