Finesse Academie of Fence

Modern and historical Fencing

About Finesse

Finesse is one of Australia’s largest modern fencing clubs and is one of very few to study both modern and historical fencing.

Finesse uses only National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) accredited coaches and supervised enrolled trainees.

We Aim

To increase general as well as fencing specific strength and fitness. As with any sport, it is recommended that you have a health check before you start, but you don’t have to be “fit”. Both your overall and specific fitness levels will rise as you progress. Focussed fitness increases your enjoyment of life, and swordplay can be a lifelong recreation.

To enjoy success in fencing, and in competitions. This requires coaches who are up to date with current teaching in both fencing and fitness. Success in fencing is the result of discovering, enjoying, achieving and then raising your own standards through sound learning and progressive goals. Fencing for “re-creative” purposes is at least as important as fencing for competition.

To develop skill in swordplay. For centuries, training with some type of foil has been the foundation for all other fencing weapons. Foil is also a challenge in its own right, up to Olympic level. We will offer epee and sabre to those with foil training. Foil is also one pre-requisite before starting any historical swordplay.

To develop authentic techniques with rapier and smallsword (16th-18th centuries). Finesse has a collection of practice weapons, and many members possess their own, with costumes. Such weapons are examples of those used in the art of individual combat. This is neither “theatrical fencing” nor battle, but safe, practical study of skills from selected primary sources (1550+) by masters of sound and proven traditions of “fence”. This is the martial art of which modern fencing competition is a symbol. This is a popular, enjoyable option.

Finesse is a founding member of the Australian Historic Swordplay Federation (AHSF). The federation run an annual Historical Fencing Convention which is very popular with Finesse Club members. Keep a watch out on the notices page for more talk about the conferences.
